This is a more personal work. As I get older, travel and experience more of the world, I become increasingly aware of how unusual and special my upbringing was.
I grew up on a farm in a region known as the Karoo in South Africa. A semi desert area of wide open space and harsh, rugged beauty. A childhood here was spent mostly outside and barefoot – and I think that’s where my feeling for sculpture was born. I loved getting my hands dirty!
I have been exploring scenes from this incredibly significant part of my life in prints, drawings and sculptures. This portrait sculpture is of a special character who worked on our farm. His deep character comes across in his weatherbeaten face and I found that using concrete to sculpt the portrait added a texture and feel that suited this perfectly.
