Lifesize Figures: Professor Kader Asmal

Lifesize Figures

Working with my colleague, Cristina Salvoldi we had the challenge to portray, in this portrait, the ‘prodigious energy’ of the late Professor Kader Asmal – a man of great intellect and moral standing.

He is shown walking with energy, a pile of messy papers and a newspaper clamped under his one arm, while gesturing with the other (which also holds a cigarette – very typical of him as a prolific smoker and ‘hand talker’ according to his son.)

The sculpture forms part of The Long March to Freedom at Century City, Cape Town. This is an installation that will eventually see an outdoor procession of more than 400 life-size bronze figures honouring individuals who fought for democracy, against oppression in South Africa – the heroes of the liberation struggle.
